Queenslanders want a vibrant and prosperous state where everyone has the opportunity to lead an active lifestyle, live in a healthy and thriving community, and participate in the economy.

Our strategic direction statement, Queensland: an age-friendly community, outlines the government's approach to achieving its vision of a thriving community where the contributions of seniors are valued and older people are able to lead healthy and productive lives in work, volunteering or retirement. We work with other Queensland Government agencies to implement a range of age-friendly initiatives outlined in the strategy's Action Plan (PDF, 1.5 MB) Action Plan (RTF, 233 KB).

Disability, Seniors and Carers leads Queensland Government initiatives focusing on the opportunities and challenges of our ageing population and older people's issues.

We invest in a range of initiatives to enhance the wellbeing and participation of older Queenslanders including:

Queensland Government website for older people

We are making it easier for older people to interact with the Queensland Government. The website is a one stop shop, where you can find information and services for seniors in one location.

Seniors Enquiry Line

A statewide information and referral service for older Queenslanders, grandparents and their family, friends and carers.

Time for Grandparents

Provides information, respite and support for grandparents raising their grandchildren through camps and recreational activities throughout Queensland.

Seniors Card

Provides older Queenslanders with discounts on a wide range of goods, services and concessions.


A range of concessions, rebates and assistance are available to assist eligible Queenslanders with the cost of living.

Elder Abuse Prevention Unit

Provides a statewide telephone information, support and referral service for anyone who is experiencing elder abuse or is concerned about someone they know. Also provides community education and awareness activities.

Provide free legal and social support services for seniors concerned about elder abuse, mistreatment or financial exploitation.

Social connection programs and activities

A range of programs and activities that focus on increasing older people’s awareness of healthy lifestyle options, reducing social isolation and strengthening personal and community connectedness.

COTA Queensland

Council on the Ageing (COTA) Queensland is funded as the Queensland Seniors Peak Service to provide information on seniors programs and services, work with other non-government organisations to improve the quality of services for older people, and provide advice to government on seniors’ issues.
